That is the opinion of ESPN FC pundit and former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner Chelsea left-back Alonso has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent days  The English transfer window has shut but La Liga sides can still make signings up until August 31  Alonso scored and claimed an assist in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Arsenal last Saturday  Brazilian left-back Emerson joined the Blues from Roma in January but has made just seven appearances in total  Mariner can understand why Alonso would want a move to Real, the club he spent the majority of his youth career at  However, he cannot see Chelsea allowing him to leave without being able to sign a replacement  “Look, he started his career at Real Madrid,” Mariner said

“I understand he may want to go back, I know all that sort of sob-story stuff  “But, in (Maurizio) Sarri’s system, I think he’s in a perfect position “We saw him at the weekend, an assist and a goal, he likes to get forward  “He has got quality with that left foot Does he want to go as an understudy? Because that’s what he’d be  “He’d be an understudy, okay he’d be going back home, but I just can’t see it “I don’t think Emerson’s ready to come in and fill that void if Alonso goes  “So I’m going to say this is a miss” Alonso has made 84 appearances in total for Chelsea, scoring 15 goals
